Dabei werden in den vielen Erzählsträngen die Personen und Geschichten immer mehr miteinander verwoben. Neben einem omnipräsenten Erzähler, erzählt auch Esther Summerson, eine der Hauptfiguren im Roman, Teile des Romans aus ihrer Sicht der Ich-Erzählung. Bleak House ist einerseits ein Gesellschaftsroman, der das Leben vor allem der englischen Oberschicht sowie ihrer Beziehungen zur Mittel- und Unterschicht im 19. Jahrhundert charakterisiert, andererseits eine satirische Abrechnung mit dem englischen Rechtssystem, insbesondere dem Court of Chancery, der unter anderem Erbschaftsstreitigkeiten regelte.
