Bleak House ist einerseits ein Gesellschaftsroman, der das Leben vor allem der englischen Oberschicht sowie ihrer Beziehungen zur Mittel- und Unterschicht im 19. Jahrhundert charakterisiert, andererseits eine satirische Abrechnung mit dem englischen Rechtssystem, insbesondere dem Court of Chancery, der unter anderem Erbschaftsstreitigkeiten regelte.
