Download and read online Friends And Then Some in PDF and EPUB One of acclaimed author Debbie Macomber’s classic novels, this tender story of two people daring to be more than “just friends” is available for the first time as an eBook. Lily Morrissey knows exactly what she wants in a husband: a big bank account. Not that she’s greedy or shallow; she just needs the security for herself and her beloved grandmother. But husband-hunting is harder than she expected, especially with her best friend Jake in the way. In fact, Jake—who would be perfect for her if he weren’t so committed to everything money can’t buy—is becoming downright distracting, with those jade eyes and that disarming grin. All Jake wants is the freedom to sail his boat, write his stories, and live life on his own terms. Then his best friend tells him she’s going groom shopping. But Jake can’t imagine life without Lily or bear the thought of her in another man’s arms. How can a rootless guy living a no-strings existence and a woman looking for someone she can count on both get what they need? By letting their hearts choose love. BONUS: This edition includes excerpts from Debbie Macomber's Last One Home and The Inn at Rose Harbor. Praise for Debbie Macomber “No one tugs at readers’ heartstrings quite as effectively as Macomber.”—Chicago Tribune “The reigning queen of women’s fiction.”—The Sacramento Bee “It’s impossible not to cheer for Macomber’s characters. . . . When it comes to creating a special place and memorable, honorable characters, nobody does it better than Macomber.”—BookPage Published by Debbie Macomber Books

Their romance on and off screen made them Hollywood's most celebrated couple and together they produced some of the most electric scenes in movie history. But when Bogart died of cancer in 1957, Bacall had to find a way of living beyond the fairytale. In a time of post war communism, Hollywood blacklisting and revolutionary politics she moved with the legends: Hemingway, the Oliviers, Katharine Hepburn, Bobby Kennedy, an engagement to Frank Sinatra and a second turbulent marriage to Jason Robards. Download and read online 1969 and Then Some in PDF and EPUB The year when everything needed to be experienced and tried, when innocence was tempted, played, and lost. 1969 was that pivotal year for the baby boomers. Young and innocent, they were given the ultimate freedoms and were faced with growing up. This touching, hilarious memoir is the true story of a late sixties grand tour of Europe—a life-defining parable, for those who remember and for those who can’t. Never before and not since have a handful of seasons so exquisitely defined the difference between right and wrong. With the gift of youth they saw, sensed, and savored the laughably clear distinction between profit motive and greed, between truth and propaganda, between national interest and defense contractors, between a lovely cloud of smoke and the smoke of napalm, and between the phantoms of security and the dangers of complacency and atrophy. Stoned to the gills and then some, these adventurers saw and felt and knew things that no generation before did. Some fully engaged in the counterculture while others merely observed, sticking a left foot in, pulling a left foot out, but not quite jumping to the full hokeypokey. It was an incredible time of self-discovery, of love, and of finding out what you were made of.

Download and read online Strangers in Their Own Land in PDF and EPUB In Strangers in Their Own Land, the renowned sociologist Arlie Hochschild embarks on a thought-provoking journey from her liberal hometown of Berkeley, California, deep into Louisiana bayou country—a stronghold of the conservative right. As she gets to know people who strongly oppose many of the ideas she famously champions, Hochschild nevertheless finds common ground and quickly warms to the people she meets—among them a Tea Party activist whose town has been swallowed by a sinkhole caused by a drilling accident—people whose concerns are actually ones that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children. Strangers in Their Own Land goes beyond the commonplace liberal idea that these are people who have been duped into voting against their own interests. Instead, Hochschild finds lives ripped apart by stagnant wages, a loss of home, an elusive American dream—and political choices and views that make sense in the context of their lives. Hochschild draws on her expert knowledge of the sociology of emotion to help us understand what it feels like to live in “red” America. Along the way she finds answers to one of the crucial questions of contemporary American politics: why do the people who would seem to benefit most from “liberal” government intervention abhor the very idea?

The book describes the lives of the author's great grandparents, grandparents and his parents before developing into a memoir, beginning with his school days in a two-room schoolhouse in Ireland and through the years of World War II. He lived with his grandparents on a farm and was hired to a farmer in the north of Ireland at the Derry rabble, a form of slavery in past years. He returned to Brooklyn and his parents in 1947. The book describes his life as a fireman as well as his son's, a member of rescue one at the sabotage of twin towers on 9/11.

The story about the bus is intended to show the children riding the school bus the first time there is nothing to fear. When I first went to school I only needed a Big Chief tablet, lead pencil, and a box of crayons. I wrote the story on required school supplies so someday the children now in kindergarten will be able to look back and compare what they needed versus their grandchildren. Santa is present in some of the stories along with his reindeer and sleigh. It goes without saying where there is Santa there will be some of his elves. There are stories about how holidays are celebrated by kindergarten students. The book also tells of the compassion and generosity of the children toward others. Put all the stories together and they will show you the world will be in good hands in the future.
