Download and read online The Czar s Last Soldier in PDF and EPUB The Czar's Last Soldier is the story of the search for the Star of Golconda a 42.5-carat diamond slightly smaller than the Hope diamond. Before he was killed, a marine buried the diamond in his foxhole on the island of Corregidor during World War II. Thirty-two years later, at a Nebraska post office, Sam Gibbons and Roscoe Barnes are removing the old post office boxes and replacing them with new ones. Both men are World War II veterans who teamed up as general contractors after the war. When the old post office boxes are removed a letter hidden between warped boards falls to the floor. The letter, dated 1942, is from the marine who died on Corregidor and gives the particulars of a jewel theft he committed at the Shanghai Officer's Club in 1941. As there are no members of the marine's family still alive, they read the letter. Shortly after the theft, the marine's regiment was transferred from China to the Philippines. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the regiment was tasked to defend Corregidor. When the order to surrender was given, not wanting the Japanese to gloom onto the stolen jewels, the marine buried them. Sam and Roscoe hunt for the jewels but are unaware they were stolen from a czarist officer and are thrust into the middle of an international legal battle.

Download and read online And the Redbird Sings in PDF and EPUB Phillip grew up with two adoptive, religious, violent parents. After his 3rd time in Vietnam, and being wounded a second time, he came home on a hospital plane. He was lost, angry, isolated, broken…socially, mentally, physical and spiritually. He became homeless and hitch hiked around America; became a drug dealer, smuggler, and faced life in prison. Phillip battled with suicidal depression and nightmares for twenty-five years. One day, while planning his suicide, he wandered into a Veteran’s Outreach Center and found two awesome recovering Vietnam warriors, now counselors, who started him on the path to wholeness. From there, Buddy, a crusty recovering former Vietnam US Marine, and Roger, an unconventional minister -both determined men, chose to stand against the storm that was Phillip’s unlife. They took him to AA and NA meetings, breakfast or lunch, to a sane, non-violent church…unlike the “hellfire and brimstone church of his youth. Laura, his beautiful, loving wife stayed with him during some of his darkest days. These five special people guided Phillip to an overcoming life: from being a Victim to a Victor, from Abandonment to Acceptance and Friendship, from Despair to Hope, from Lost to Found…and from a life of Hate to life of Love. At age 70, Phillip has 30 years of sobriety, hope, peace, and a love that will not let him go. He writes about coming back from the dark places in his life, and truly believes that, using the tools he describes in his book, you can come back too. You Are Not Alone. You Are LOVED. There Is HOPE!

Download and read online One Shot at Forever in PDF and EPUB "One Shot at Forever is powerful, inspirational. . . . This isn't merely a book about baseball. It's a book about heart." --Jeff Pearlman, New York Times bestselling author of Boys Will Be Boys and The Bad Guys Won In 1971, a small-town high school baseball team from rural Illinois, playing with hand-me-down uniforms and peace signs on their hats, defied convention and the odds. Led by an English teacher with no coaching experience, the Macon Ironmen emerged from a field of 370 teams to represent the smallest school in Illinois history to make the state final, a distinction that still stands. There the Ironmen would play against a Chicago powerhouse in a dramatic game that would change their lives forever. In this gripping, cinematic narrative, Chris Ballard tells the story of the team and its coach, Lynn Sweet: a hippie, dreamer, and intellectual who arrived in Macon in 1966, bringing progressive ideas to a town stuck in the Eisenhower era. Beloved by students but not administration, Sweet reluctantly took over the ragtag team, intent on teaching the boys as much about life as baseball. Together they embarked on an improbable postseason run that buoyed a small town in desperate need of something to celebrate. Engaging and poignant, One Shot at Forever is a testament to the power of high school sports to shape the lives of those who play them, and it reminds us that there are few bonds more sacred than that among a coach, a team, and a town. "Macon's run at the title reminds us why sports matter and why sportswriting has such great power to inspire. . . . [It's] one hell of a good story, and Ballard has written one hell of a good book." --Jonathan Eig, Chicago Tribune
