Download and read online The Springboard in the Pond in PDF and EPUB Although others have written eloquently on the relationship of water to built form, until now no one has investigated the swimming, pool as a quintessentially modern and American space, reflecting America's infatuation with hygiene, skin, and recreation. In The Springboard in the Pond, Thomas van Leeuwen looks at a familiar hole - the domestic swimming pool - and discovers an icon indispensable to the reading of twentieth-century modernism. At one level, the book is a rereading of modern architecture that will leave that story permanently altered. At another level, it is the story of the origin and evolution of the private swimming pool as a building type and cultural artifact. And at still another level, it is a material philosophy of water. Van Leeuwen explores the human relationship to water from a variety of viewpoints: social, religious, artistic, sexual, psychological, technical, and above all architectural.

Download and read online Women and Politics in Asia in PDF and EPUB Why study the nexus of gender, politics, and democracy in Asia? What kind of democracy and political participation can we conceptualize and identify for this heterogeneous region? In the increasingly visible Asian context, which concepts, contexts, discourses, and practices do we need to reflect upon most in order to understand the complex relationship between gender and democratic processes? The contributions in this book engage with precisely these crucial questions, and do so by drawing on a variety of case studies covering India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. In the process, they scrutinize women's roles, strategies, practices, and discourses on political participation and gender-inclusive political reform in various arenas of political engagement. The book's essays range from studies of political actors and institutions, public policy and gender mainstreaming, political theory and citizenship discourses, to the study of various women's movements. You have just found it. In Springboard, award-winning author and teacher G. Richard Shell helps you find your future. His advice: Take an honest look inside and then answer two questions: What, for me, is success? How will I achieve it? You will begin by assessing your current beliefs about success, including the hidden influences of family, media, and culture. These are where the pressures to live “someone else’s life” come from. Once you gain perspective on these outside forces, you will be ready to look inside at your unique combination of passions and capabilities. The goal: to focus more on what gives meaning and excitement to your life and less on what you are “supposed” to want. Drawing on his decades of research, Shell offers personalized assessments to help you probe your past, imagine your future, and measure your strengths. He then combines these with the latest scientific insights on everything from self-confidence and happiness to relationships and careers. Throughout, he shares inspiring examples of people who found what they were meant to do by embracing their own true measure of success. Eric Adler: one of Shell’s former students who walked away from a conventional business career to help launch a revolutionary new concept in public education that has placed hundreds of inner-city high school students in top colleges. Kurt Timken: a Harvard-educated son of a Fortune 500 CEO who found his true calling as a hard-charging police officer fighting drug lords in southern California. Cynthia Stafford: an office worker who became one of her community’s leading promoters of theater and the arts. Get ready for the journey of a lifetime—one that will help you reevaluate your future and envision success on your own terms. Students and executives say that Richard Shell’s courses have changed their lives. Let this book change yours.

Download and read online Springboard To Berlin in PDF and EPUB Early on the morning of November 8th, 1942, Allied invasion forces struck simultaneously at half a dozen places in North Africa. From that moment news of the campaign poured out from innumerable points up and down the coast. Obviously no one person could be everywhere at once, or could hope to tell the complete story. This could only be done by the collaboration of several of those who were there. Springboard to Berlin is the work of four correspondents of the United Press. John A. Parris, Jr. in the London office was in an excellent position to give us a glimpse of what went on before those convoys finally slipped through the Straits of Gibraltar (Part I). He also covers Oran (Part V), having gone in with the troops at Arzu. His familiarity with the whole picture has enabled him to also provide a portion on Casablanca (Part IV) and later a chapter on the Casablanca Conference (Part VII). Leo Disher had the unique experience of actually sailing on H.M.S. Walney, which was sent to break the boom at Oran harbor (Part II). Ned Russell covers Operations at Algiers (Part III), and the November-December dash for Bizerte and Tunis (Part VI). Attached to the British First Army, he went up the coast from Bône. He also witnessed the final knockout at Bizerte and Tunis (Part IX, sent to London). John Parris and Phil Ault, then in London, also contributed to the section and got it into the hands of a naval officer bound for New York. Finally, Ned Russell continued across the Mediterranean with the invasion forces (Part X), analyzing the breakdown of the Axis African army and describing the conquest of Lampedusa and most of Sicily. Phil Ault was in the thick of the fighting at Kasserine Pass, El Guettar in Tunisia, and the other famous battles. In Part VIII he tells how the Americans won their spurs there.
