Download and read online Catalogue of the Benthic Marine Algae of the Indian Ocean in PDF and EPUB This catalogue, which integrates nearly 35,000 records of benthic marine algae from the Indian Ocean into a taxonomic classification comprising 3,355 specific and infraspecific taxa in 629 genera, will greatly facilitate future work in this region. The bibliography of 4,000 references is the largest list of phycological literature ever published. The extensive taxonomic and nomenclatural notes are of paramount importance.
Download and read online Industrial Exploitation of Microorganisms in PDF and EPUB This book embodies 21 review articles contributed by subject experts of various areas of industrial microbiology. The articles are devoted to pharma industries, food and enzyme industries, textile industry, agro-industry and cottage industry. Yeast is one of the important microorganisms which have been used to produce beverages, alcohols and fermented food commodities for a very long time. In recent years, it has been the first choice among eukaryotes to use in recombinant technology. Yeast and Spirulina are being used and marketed as Single Cell Protein (SCP). Mushrooms have been used by humans down the ages. In addition to a rich source of mycoprotein, they have medicinal values also against many ailments. Number of bioactive novel compounds is increasing with the discovery of microbial species and newer groups of microorganisms. Some chapters are devoted to microbial bioinoculants used as biofertilizers because they are rich source of nitrogen and phosphorus for both legumes and non-legumes. They are being manufactured and sold in market with different trade names. In addition, several microbial enzymes have been produced and commercialized by various industries, but highly active and potential enzymes produced through recombinant DNA technology hold much importance. For example, microbial proteases find application in detergent leather, food and pharma industries and provide eco-friendly technology for bioremediation. Laccase has been worked out to be a good tool for bioremediation of non-degradable wastes and xenobiotic chemicals. Besides, laccase-based biosensors have also been constructed which can be used for phenol determination, monitoring of lignin and plant flavonoids. Various microbial phytases as feed supplemented have been used in freshwater and marine aquaculture for improving the growth performance of fishes. Nowadays aquaculture is growing rapidly to meet increasing food demand throughout the world for high quality fish. More than 16,000 bioactive compounds have been isolated from actinomycetes alone including antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, siderophores and nanoparticles. Biosynthesis of nanoparticles by bacteria, actinomycetes and algae has been reported and work is being done nationally and internationally.
Download and read online Early Flowers and Angiosperm Evolution in PDF and EPUB The recent discovery of diverse fossil flowers and floral organs in Cretaceous strata has revealed astonishing details about the structural and systematic diversity of early angiosperms. Exploring the rich fossil record that has accumulated over the last three decades, this is a unique study of the evolutionary history of flowering plants from their earliest phases in obscurity to their dominance in modern vegetation. The discussion provides comprehensive biological and geological background information, before moving on to summarise the fossil record in detail. Including previously unpublished results based on research into Early and Late Cretaceous fossil floras from Europe and North America, the authors draw on direct palaeontological evidence of the pattern of angiosperm evolution through time. Synthesising palaeobotanical data with information from living plants, this unique book explores the latest research in the field, highlighting connections with phylogenetic systematics, structure and the biology of extant angiosperms.

Download and read online Wetlands of the World I Inventory Ecology and Management in PDF and EPUB The impetus for this volume was the 2nd International Wetlands Conference which was held in June, 1984 at Trebon, Czechoslovakia. An overview of the worlds wetlands was one of the themes of the conference and it was decided that a useful follow-up would be a publication on the same topic. The initial goal was to cover as many of the worlds wetlands as possible in one volume and to have an emphasis on wetland ecology, biota, classification, and management. Individuals who made presentations at the Trebon confer ence were asked to prepare chapters and the editors also solicited other contributions. For a variety of reasons, the initial goal has been difficult to reach, especially coverage of the entire globe, and it has been necessary to publish the contributions in more than one volume. Volume 1 represents the com pletion of the first phase of the project and it covers most of the Western Hemisphere, Australia, most of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Mediter ranean region, and Papua New Guinea. Volume 2 will contain chapters on Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, most of northern and It is our hope that Volume western Asia, the Middle East, and Indonesia. 2 will appear in the near future and, if possible, a third volume will be published if authors can be secured to cover areas such as the Far East, other parts of the Indo-Pacific region, and New Zealand.

Download and read online Imperial Botanical Conference in PDF and EPUB Originally published in 1925, this book contains the proceedings of the Imperial Botanical Conference, held at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in July 1924. The conference decided on a number of technical directions to assist botanists in all corners of the British Empire in their study of native flora and diseases of plants. The papers published include several by celebrated botanists of the day, including Dr Redcliffe Salaman and Professor J. Percival. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of botany.
Download and read online Potential Microorganisms For Sustainable Agriculture A Techno Commercial Perspective in PDF and EPUB The number of potential microbes exploited commercially is scanty irrespective of their high number present in the diverse habitats. In recent years, they have shown successfulness in multifarious areas such as production of industrially viable products, organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, recovery of metals, improvement and maintenance of environmental quality, and insect and pest control. The Twenty-three articles included here fall under three broad categories, namely, agricultural microbiology, industrial microbiology and bioremediation. The psychrophiles hold many biological secrets such as biochemical limits to macromolecular stability and the blueprints for constructing the stable macromolecules. Lactic acid bacteria are known for their role in the preparation of fermented dairy products. Potential strains for production of lactic acid with emphasis on its fermentation, economics and systematics have been dealt with in greater detail. Biotechnological applications of pectinases in general and alkaline pectinases in particular play an important role in industry. Production, characteristics and applications of microbial alkaline pectinolytic enzymes have been elaborated. Production of ergot alkaloids thrives a novel knowledge. Now-a-days, semi-synthetic ergot alkaloids are widely used as a potential therapeutic agent. Microbial production of glucans, functional organization and their industrial significance have been systematically reviewed. Bioactive exopolysaccharides from mushrooms have gained importance in recent years. Production and characterization of exopolysaccharides and conversion of unsaturated fatty acids into value-added hydroxyl fatty acids by using microorganisms are used in a wide range of industrial products. Enhancing the microbial production of 1,3-propanidial and its application highlights the commercial exploitation of potential microorganisms. Aldehyde and organic acid production by using oxydases and their derivatives advantageous role in industry. Some chapters are devoted to the potential entomopathogenic fungi for management of insect pests, biotechnological applications of fusaria, microbial metabolite-mediated biocontrol of soil-borne plant pathogens, bioremediation of heavy metals, organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides. Bioinoculants apart from being eco-friendly are being used, but reviewers have emphasized the constraints in commercial bioinoculant production and their quality assurance. All the articles of this volume depict the role of microorganisms in agricultural industries. The exploitation of such beneficial microorganisms may improve agricultural systems with economically sound production of human food and animal feed. This volume will certainly help the PG and research students of agricultural microbiology and biotechnology.
