Westlake turns the world of crime and criminals upside-down: the bad get better, the good get worse, and God save anyone caught between a thief named John Dortmunder and his most improbable plans. It's a long way from the island of Manhattan to the island resort where Preston Fareweather has his hedonistic hideout-avoiding the legal prosecutions of five embittered ex-wives and enjoying the attentions of the prettiest gold diggers who happen to come his way. A terrible human being, Preston makes the terrible mistake of getting friendly with an equally dyspeptic personality: a New York fence named Arnie Albright. Arnie went to the island paradise to become a happier man. It worked. After a week with Preston, Arnie comes home to New York with a whole new attitude and a proposition for his associate John Dortmunder: a can't miss, million-dollar robbery-of Preston's nearly unguarded, art-filled Fifth Avenue penthouse. But when Dortmunder and his clean-up crew get together to plan the heist, they quickly get distracted and suddenly a billionaire from Fifth Avenue and a would-be Tony Soprano from New Jersey have one thing in common: John Dortmunder is after them both at the same time...and disaster can't be far behind.

Download and read online Watching Your Back in PDF and EPUB The term martial art, like the title, The Art of War, has a dissonant ring. To associate art, that sublime expression of the human spirit, with the enterprise of maiming and killing seems almost profane. Similarly, the martial arts have long been associated with traditional medicine. But, how can the art of healing ally itself with the art of killing? Watching Your Back applies Daoist notions of wellness and survival to reconcile these apparent paradoxes and unveil the origins and rationale of the unexplored symbiosis of Chinese medicine and the martial arts. It discusses the applications of Daoist philosophy and its practitioners, explains how creative arts are simultaneously conserved and advanced within a traditional Chinese lineage, and clarifies the differences between the separate, but parallel, martial and military disciplines. Drawing from history, philosophy, medicine, linguistics, and the realities of combat, Dr. Schmieg convincingly describes how early proponents of Daoism responded to sociopolitical events in China to shape a unique martial arts tradition and how this ancient system evolved into modern combat forms. Throughout he makes ample use of entertaining anecdotes taken from his years of study under a Daoist physician scholar and old school boxer. Written with both the layperson and scholar in mind, Watching Your Back examines the full spectrum of the martial arts while demystifying its philosophy and debunking its myths, and thus brilliantly reveals the true majesty of the ancient Chinese art of self-defense. Tamsin Delacorte is a real estate agent and former pageant queen; Janey Epstein, a fashionista, is married to an Internet wizard; and Chessie Jones husband, it's whispered, is under federal investigation. They’re friends with Michael Swett, a preppy playboy, but the leader of their pack is Diandra Fox, a stunning British upstart who is a clothes horse, horse trainer, and aggressive social climber. Another horse trainer, the devastatingly handsome Alex Manos, is Diandra’s professional rival and Paige’s problematic romantic interest. See, Paige has a boyfriend back in LA, Ric, who yearns to ditch his screenwriting career to become a jazz musician. While Paige is making a name for herself as a blogger in Beddington, she’s getting reports that her boyfriend is dallying with a famous adult film actress, Tickled Pink, who had a turn playing herself in a top-rated HBO series. Meanwhile, back in Beddington, Diandra’s entourage is hatching a plan. Using Janey’s seemingly limitless financial resources, they launch and star in their own reality show, which they’re calling "The Real Horsewives," and what’s more, they want Paige to script it. Meanwhile a valuable horse is found dead in a paddock. Was it, as Diandra claims, an accident, or was foul play at hand?

Download and read online Watch Your Back in PDF and EPUB Over the past twenty years, treatment of back pain has become ever more expensive and intensive. Use of MRI scans, narcotic painkillers, injections, and invasive spine surgery have all grown by several hundred percent. In some areas of medicine, newer treatments have improved quality and duration of life, but as back pain is treated more aggressively, annual surveys of people with back pain report steadily worse impairments. In Watch Your Back!, Richard A. Deyo, MD, proposes an approach to managing back pain, which most adults in the United States experience at some point, that empowers the individual and leads more directly to effective care. Though it may seem counterintuitive, fewer medical interventions may produce better results. Expecting a probe, a pill, or a procedure to cure back pain is usually unrealistic, yet entire industries promote the notion that someone else will "fix" you. Watch Your Back! exposes these flaws in the current approach to back pain, along with the profit motives and conflicts of interest behind many of them. The book dramatizes the problems with stories of prominent individuals who encountered high-tech pitfalls, then found low-tech solutions suited to their lifestyles and the nature of their back pain. Watch Your Back! will be useful not only for people with back pain but also for doctors and policy makers. Our health care system has a growing interest in reducing waste, overuse, and unnecessary care. There's a consensus that health care is too expensive and that we get too little for the money. Back pain exemplifies a problem for which we can simultaneously improve quality of care and reduce costs.

Download and read online Keep Watching Your Back in PDF and EPUB This is a work of contemporary fiction; an adventure. Sam Winter lives in Mendocino, California with her parents. She has been invited out to Croatia for a short vacation by her pen friend, Tomislav Petrovic. Whilst sitting in a restaurant having refreshment, he overhears a conversation from a group of men at the next table; something about a bank robbery. As the group disperse, one of them drops a sheet of paper that turns out to be the plan of a bank building and details on how they plan to rob it. Sam and Tomislav take their evidence to the police. Arrests are made and as a result, Tomislav begins to receive threatening phone calls. One day whilst out on a picnic, their car is booby-trapped and Tom is killed in the explosion. Sam narrowly escapes with her life. Three years on, she's back in Croatia on vacation with a young friend, Josie Moore. Everything is going well until they run into Milos Dragovic. He is looking for photographs that he claims were taken of him and his 'friend' Tomislav, and he wants them badly. Those pictures can be had from Tomislav's PC but his mother wouldn't give Milos access to it. Maybe Sam and Josie would be able to persuade her. At the house, the two women find photos of Milos and Co on the hard drive, sitting at a table in the restaurant that day three years ago. Again, they attempt to take their evidence to the police, but before they can do this however, they are threatened by a gunman with a high-powered rifle and warned not to go near the police. They are told there will be a rendezvous point at which they will be met by the gang and they will hand over the photos. Sam and Josie have no intentions of meeting their demands and are determined that the only recipients of the pictures will be the police. From now on, they have to watch their backs and be careful where they go.
